Six weeks abroad, and one returns to some astonishing changes: Lord Hill at the helm of the BBC, the ╥Listener╙ diverted from the contemplative to the contemporary, and the BBC proudly presenting as its latest acquisition a posse of ex-pirate disc jockeys.
╥Radio One,╙ the new pop programme for which these young men were recruited, begins on September 30. It must in fact be a fairly arduous aspect of public service, catering for so much sustained mindlessness, and Mr Robin Scott, the new programme╒s director, who told the press last week it would be ╥a top gear type of forward-looking programme╙ has plainly been working hard at bridging the discrepancy between the programme╒s demands and his own BBC urbanity. The former pirates, gaily dressed and very matey, were a disarming crew. They each have an eight-week contract, will earn at the least not less than before, and are grateful for the refuge.
